Bam's Music Reviews: Fallen (Evanescence, 2003)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ Fallen is the debut album by alternate metal band Evanescence, released on March 4th, 2003 through Wind-Up Records. Recorded over the course of four months in late 2002, the album was marred by executive meddling, including turning the lead single, "Bring Me To Life", from an electronic metal track into nu-metal style rap rock. Despite fairly high sales, two of its tracks featuring in the soundtrack of the movie Daredevil , and generally positive praise from critics at the time, the album is more so known for many internet memes associated with some of its tracks (Wake Me Up Inside and the My Immortal fanfic being the two biggest ones that I'm personally familiar with). With the album receiving a 20th anniversary remaster (that happened to be released today as of the writing of this review!), a big question has to be asked: has this album stood the test of time and does it work as an alt-metal album, or ...

Bam's Music Reviews: The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux (Roger Waters, 2023)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux is a progressive rock/spoken word album by Roger Waters. It was released under his own label, SGB Music Limited, on October 6th, 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon , and serves as a "re-imagining" of the original 1973 album. According to Waters, the album's style was inspired by The Lockdown Sessions , an album he had released the previous year which contained several stripped-down versions of older Pink Floyd songs, the most notable of which being " Comfortably Numb 2022" , a song he would use as the opener during his controversial This Is Not a Drill tour (which will not be discussed in this review, as it does not pertain to the quality of it). Even before release, many people saw it as a polarizing concept, a notion which wasn't brightened in the slightest once singles like " Money"  started rolling i...

Bam's Music Reviews: Hawaii: Part II (ミラクルミュージカル, 2012)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ Hawaii: Part II is an indie pop album released by Joe Hawley under the project ミラクルミュージカル (Miracle Musical) on December 12th, 2012 independently through Bandcamp. Described by Hawley as a "Genre of infinity, which is expressed through hologram", the album features all but one of the band members from Tally Hall and is partially derived from demos accumulated from as early as 2005, leading some people to consider it the unofficial third Tally Hall album. I first ran into this album several years ago, circa 2014 or 2015, and remember liking it a decent bit for its more out-there sound and songs compared to what I had been familiar with at the time, although I really didn't listen to the thing in its full after the first couple times. Now, nearly a decade later, and after taking a much deeper dive into musical analysis over the years, have my thoughts on it changed? Only one way to find out! Without further ad...

Bam's Music Reviews: 1000 Gecs (100 gecs, 2019)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ 1000 Gecs is an experimental hyperpop album by the music duo 100 Gecs, released on May 31st, 2019 by Dog Show Records. It released two days after one of the lead sngles for the album, "Money Machine". Described by some as "late 2000s Internet given album-form", the album has certainly created a reputation around itself which has led to its rather polarizing status, with some calling it annoying noise while others believe it's a great critique on the music industry. Where does my spectrum fall on this spectrum? Only one way to find out! Without further ado... ...gecgecgec- Oh, sorry about that. Yeah, uh, I really  like this album. Having enjoyed my fair share of speedcore and gabber from multitude of albums, I've gotten used to listening to more... noisier types of electronic music, and 1000 Gecs has this in strives. The album is filled to the brim with blaring bass hits and heavily...

Bam's Music Reviews: Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (múm, 1999)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK is the debut album of the experimental Icelandic band múm, originally released exclusively in Iceland on December 23rd, 1999 under the TMT Entertainment label, after which it would receive multiple rereleases across the globe, most notably with a 20th anniversary remastering in 2019, released then under the Morr Music label. The album, and the band itself, has been somewhat obscure for the 20+ years they've existed, despite the album receiving critical acclaim from multiple sources, with Matt LeMay of Pitchfork deeming it " one of the most deeply, purely emotionally affecting albums of the year" in his review of the album in 2001. I personally happened to stumble onto this album through Spotify's Discover algorithm, and quickly added the whole thing into my lists. Be ready for a strange, yet emotionally powerful album! Without further ado... Yesterday Was Dramatic (w...

Bam's Music Reviews: St. Anger (Metallica, 2003)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ St. Anger is an alternative metal album by the prolific Metallica, first released on June 5th of the year 2003 (Oh hey, that's my second birthday!) through Elektra Records, and happened to be their final record under that label before the band moved over to Warner Records. Released 5 days ahead of its original release date due to the band's ongoing crusade against peer-to-peer sharing networks like Napster, the album is often considered one of the worst albums put out by the band due to a very troubled production involving questionable snare drums, the lead singer's stint in rehab and a distinct attempt to sound more "raw". It's been nearly 20 years since the album came out, and one might wonder at this point: "Was it really  as bad as it was on release?" Only one way to find out! Without further ado... Before we get into the review in detail, I would just like to say that YES.  It...

Bam's Music Reviews: War Stories (Unkle, 2007)

Image
I'm Bam. I like possums, I like music! Let's get into it~ War Stories is a trip hop album from the musical group UNKLE. Originally released through the now defunct label Surrender All (which happened to be ran by UNKLE!) in late June of 2007, the album happened to be the final release of the third incarnation of the music group, along with the final album involving Rich File, who had been with the group since their debut album in 1998, Psyence Fiction. Much like every other album by the group, many of the songs featured popular artists from the alternative and electronic scene of the time, including Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), 3D (Massive Attack) and Ian Astbury (The Cult). I've been a casual fan of UNKLE for about six years now, and songs from War Stories happened to be some of the first ones I was introduced to. It's only fitting, then, that I'm tackling this album as the first one from their repertoire! Without further ado... This album is quite the mon...
